The Musical Sentence.

It is very important to define and understand a musical sentence because that way we are easily able to understand a composition. Arnold Schoenberg, an Austrian composer, theorist and painter, was the first one who brought out the concept of the sentence.

By definition, in its simplest way, the musical sentence is an 8-measure theme, that consists of two different phrases. The first phrase is the Presentation phrase and the second is called the Continuation phrase in which the Presentation phrase begins the sentence and the Continuation phrase (or a couple of them) leads to the cadence. With the cadence one musical sentence is finished.
