Technology has definitively allowed us to many ways of playing and creating music, thus facilitating the creative process.

For modern piano students, virtual keyboards can offer an alternative to practice in instruments which are not very expensive but with the sound of the most renowned acoustic pianos; and for composers and music producers, the virtual keyboards have opened numerous paths for expanding the creativity and musical quality and the acceleration of the musical creation and notation as well.

In these current times, virtual and midi keyboards are a fantastic way of teaching music online for all piano teachers out there.

We have various types of virtual keyboards at hand:

MIDI keyboards, apps, keyboards that can connect to the DAW system (Digital Audio Workstation), VST’s (virtual studio technology), and online virtual keyboards.

A virtual keyboard can have many different interfaces:

  • A touch- screen keyboard that lays out on the device’s screen
  • A Projected Keyboard (can be projected to any flat surface)
  • On Augmented Reality

The first one is commonly used in apps, which are extremely useful for users on mobile phones or tablets.

The second and third ones are fantastic for demonstrating in lessons.

For composers and music producers, there is nothing like the MIDI keyboards connected via VST or any other software to input the notes and have top-quality sound.

These virtual keyboards allow playing the music straight forward and with articulations and dynamics, which then other software will read and translate using a specific code, for example, Sibelius.

For online lessons or students who cannot access a keyboard, there are many options out there; some even have recording options!

Technology is there to make our lives easier and get faster results, but let us not forget that it is always the musician’s soul who gives true meaning to the music since the beginning of times.
