Harmonic analysis: piano skills

Harmonic analysis: piano skills

In order to organise a piano performance professionally, we need to have a clear perspective on harmony.

This subject, unfortunately, is not the easiest one to land on. Understanding harmony can take a big chunk of our time. The only way we can optimize this process is by focusing on those areas which we really need to be solid on.

When we analyse proper Classical Music, we focus on 18th-century compositions. At WKMT we research on Haydn piano sonatas, these piano sonatas use a wide array of harmonic devices, but not all the ones the subject has to offer. Maestro Juan Rezzuto, founder and director of WKMT, is publishing a group of backup articles which brief on the precise harmonic devices we need to be “natural” at. Knowing well how these elements are integrated into the musical score can substantially faster-up the analysis process. In this way, we will be better equipped to analyse quickly and efficiently analyse classical music and most specifically Haydn piano sonatas.

Harmony analysis is definitely one of those piano skills you can’t miss to develop.
